Playmaker Davies vows to make impact

06/06/2019

New fly half Sam Davies believes he ‘can make a real difference’ after arriving at Dragons – and revealed how the Dean Ryan factor had rubber-stamped his move to Rodney Parade.

Wales international Davies signed a two-year contract last week to join the Dragons in a statement signing for the Gwent region.

Playmaker Davies - who has won eight caps for his country and is a former IRB Junior Player of the Year – got his first look around Rodney Parade as a Dragons player on Thursday as he met the media to discuss his switch.

And the 25-year-old – who piled up an impressive 836 points in 150 games for Ospreys – believes the timing is definitely right for a new challenge.

“Not only is there an exciting young team here, having spoken to Dean (Ryan) I knew the ambition that was here too,” said Davies.

“It’s exciting for me to know the Dragons are being ambitious and I’m keen to be part of that.

“It’s the right time for me to move on in my career and this is a new chapter. It’s a fresh start and moving on can be good for you.

“When I met with Dean I knew this was the right move,” he added. “This is a team where I feel I can make a real difference and there are a lot of talented boys here already. Hopefully we can now push forward.

“There is competition here, but I see this as an opportunity and if I can get my game going then I will be in a good place.”

Davies has also underlined his commitment to Wales and pulling on the red jersey again in the future.

“I’m only 25-years-old and paying for Wales is a big target if mine,” he said.

“There is a new coaching team in place and if we can get things right here the hopefully I can get that recognition.

“I feel my best rugby is ahead of me,” he added. “You have to be positive and if I can help get the team moving in the right direction then I feel I will play well too.

"When I thought about my Wales ambitions and the opportunity that arose here, it was a no-brainer.

“I want to play for Wales and if I move away then that is gone and I could become the forgotten man. I want to stamp my authority on a team here in Wales and this the best opportunity to do so.”
