The new Dragons Wheelchair Rugby Team, based at Cwmbran Stadium, has been brought about with the help of Greg Woods, WRU Enterprise Manager, Darren Carew, National Disability Lead Officer, and the Dragons WRU rugby Development dept. led by Adrian Evans.
Since Darren’s introduction into the rugby development team a lot of work has been going on behind the scenes in the Gwent region to offer rugby to all irrespective of any physical or learning needs.
We now run a mixed ability team based at Cwmbran RFC - an inclusive community club that moves around the region so everyone gets an opportunity to take part.
The Dragons Wheelchair Rugby squad meets every Tuesday evening from 5pm until 7pm at Cwmbran Stadium and currently has a squad of around 10 players.
However, we are recruiting and looking for new players to come along - no experience is necessary and beginners are welcome!
Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby (GBWR) qualified coaches Chris Garrett and Ieuan Coombs are looking forward to progressing the group into a competitive team with help from GBWR officer Kira Philpot.
The team hopes to play a series of friendly matches in the autumn, coinciding with the Rugby World Cup.
To continue the development of the club, we are now looking to recruit a number of off court positions to support the team, from Team Manager to Team Mechanic.
If you are interested in finding out more or becoming part of the group, or even a sponsor, please contact Nway@wru.wales
The group would like to personally thank Angharad Collins and Torfaen Leisure Trust for their continued support.
