Brilliant Basham treble seals U20 win

10/02/2019

Dragons No 8 Taine Basham added to his growing reputation as he scored a hat-trick of tries to steer Wales U20 to a comprehensive 42-12 win over Italy.

It was result that completed a good weekend for Wales as it followed the 26-15 triumph by the senior side in the Guinness Six Nations and the gutsy 3-3 draw by Wales Women.

Italy came into the game on the back of a rousing win in Scotland in Round 1 and having beaten Wales in Colwyn Bay in last year's fixture.

Wales had been beaten in France in their opening match, but they were never threatened in a game that was dominated by Basham and his treble.

Dragons duo Ed Scragg and Dafydd Buckland also scored tries while regional team-mates Aneurin Owen, Deon Smith, Lennon Greggains, Will Griffiths and Tom Devine were all involved.

“Fair play to the team, it was an excellent performance by all. We talked about coming here and getting the job done,” said Basham after the game.

“It's tough going to Italy but we put in the performance and didn't take our foot off the gas, so we are very pleased.

“They were typical passionate Italians and if you let them in the game early then the crowd will get behind them.

“We were disappointed with the result against France, but not the performance. We went to Italy to get the job done and getting a bonus point for us. Hopefully now it should be a good encounter with England.”
