Dragons Lyn Jones reflects on New Years Day derby

The Cardiff Blues took the spoils with a score of 11-9, in the second act of the Welsh derby at Rodney Parade.

It was a nail-biting end as the Dragons attempted to finish what they had started in Cardiff on Boxing Day, after replacement Dorian Jones attempted a tough drop goal from halfway. Only for the ball to be touched mid flight by the Blues resulting in a five metre scrum with just seconds left on the clock. It wasn’t meant to be after the visitors won the penalty at the scrum and kicked the ball out.

Director of Rugby Lyn Jones commented: “We are disappointed to lose but were aware of how tough it would be in back-to-back local derbies.

"It was a fight, both teams tried to be positive and play a bit of rugby but scrum time was probably 25 to 30 minutes of the game.

"However, we didn't take our chances when they came our way. We missed a kick in front of the posts, lost a tap and go on the line and Matthew Pewtner's try was disallowed for obstruction.

"That's the game. One day it's with you and the other day it's not."

The Men of Gwent, who travel to the Ospreys a week on Sunday, headed into the game on the back of four successive wins and Jones believes that shows there is reason for optimism in 2015.

"We are still concentrating on our long-term objectives in turning the Dragons around to be successful. Today was a realisation that we've still got work to do but we are moving in the right direction."
