Dragons pay tribute to Ken Hewitt

Newport Gwent Dragons has paid tribute to WRU board member Ken Hewitt, who passed away recently after a long illness.

Ken was a devout supporter of rugby in Monmouthshire and a regular attendee of Regional matches.

Ken played youth and senior rugby for both Cwmtillery and Abertillary before joining Abergavenny Rugby Club where he coached for 20 years.

The former head teacher of Harold Road School, Abergavenny was also secretary of the old Monmouthshire league and then in 1993 became the District A representative of the WRU, he then went on to serve as vice-chairman of the WRU board.

On behalf of the Newport Gwent Dragons and Newport RFC, Rodney Parade director Will Godfrey commented: “We are saddened to hear of the death of Ken Hewitt after a long illness.

“Ken was just 79 and still actively involved in Welsh Rugby until only days before his death. He was an ardent backer of the need for representative regional rugby in Gwent and with his passing the Dragons have lost a true supporter.

“His support for rugby went back a long way; in 1963 Ken managed to get his school (or a large part of it) closed for the afternoon so that they could come to Rodney Parade to watch the All Blacks in which his fellow teacher Brian Price was playing.

“Supporters of the Region send their condolences to his wife and family on the passing of a true friend.”
