Both Lewis Evans and Ashley Smith learnt their skills at Newport High School Old Boys RFC before moving on to higher things. Fielding teams in every age group, a team for players with learning difficulties and, beginning in the new season, a Veterans XV, NHSOB RFC is proud to be the largest community rugby club in Wales. The ethos of the club is togetherness, inclusion, participation and above all enjoyment. We aim to create a community centred on rugby and involving all of any age, sex or ability.
Currently children can start training at 4+ (Reception in school) and they may take part in matches when they are 6. Children under 6 are part of the Under 8's but play rugby based games team management as part of the "Experience" which concentrates on fun while learning basic skills. At Under 9 players are introduced to contact rugby and all rugby is mixed up to the age of 12, when the girls move to their own section.
We regularly play clubs from all over the Gwent region and further afield including touring sides, and take part in tournaments in a variety of places. This season our Under 10s travelled to Cleve in Bristol and returned as champions. There are also annual tours and a variety of social events.
We are eager to welcome new player regardless of experience or ability and will start training at 10am on Saturday 1st September. We encourage parents and siblings to take part in club activities and to help run the teams as managers, assistants, coaches, referees and many other roles.
All coaches are WRU registered and he club pays for people to attend WRU run coaching and refereeing courses.
