Thousands of people braved the heavy showers yesterday to turn out for the Cwmbran Big Event Finale. The rain failed to put a damper on things as a week of cultural and sporting activities drew to a close.
Manning the stand on behalf of the Dragons were players such as Jason Tovey, Joe Bedford, Lewis Evans and Ashley Smith. Not only were they representing the team but they were also on hand to provide photographs and signed memorabilia to the supporters. The new stand was more than a place to meet favourite players but also a place where fans and the public could catch up on news or try one of the many competitions.
In the main area our players got to stretch their legs thanks to a skills session provided by our community department. Along with volunteers from the crowd they demonstrated ball skills and general rugby abilities.
The Dragons then faced the toughest event of the Big Event - the Tug-o-War competition. They faced fierce opposition from the Gwent Young Farmers, Croesyceiliog Women's Rugby Team, Torfean Leisure Employees and Cwmbran Taekwondo Team. By the time the finals had rolled around there was a large crowd gathered to watch the Dragons take on the Gwent Young Farmers. After two gruelling rounds the Dragons came out on top and were presented with the Winner's Trophy.
