Match Report from Amateur Game

The Dragons made it four wins from four with a 13-27 win over the previously undefeated Blues on Tuesday night

Kath McCarthy | 15/02/2006

On a damp and windy night at Beddua RFC The Dragons continued their winning ways by beating the previously undefeated Blues. The game was played at a high pace with both sides looking to spread the ball at every opportunity and the game was finely balanced until the Blues opened the scoring with a penalty in the first ten minutes.

After some good work by the forwards driving towards the line, the Blues midfield was caught offside, Jamie Howells of Bargoed converted the penalty.

The Dragons forwards then gained ascendancy and started to win good possession which provided a platform for Rhodri Jones to attack up the blindside resulting in a try for David James of Blackwood.

The Blues countered very well with their fullback making good headway into The Dragons half and from a quick ruck the Blues scored under the posts, for a converted try. In the closing stages of the first half some good lineout work from the visitors provided quality ball for the backs to create an opening for Jamie Howells of Bargoed to score a converted try. The Blues replied with a penalty on the half time whistle.

Half Time Score 13-15

The second half started with The Dragons maintaining the upper hand in the forwards with good work done in the scrum by Ross Jones, Peter Harrison and Anthony Lott. After twenty minutes without a score The Dragons were awarded a penalty which was kicked to touch ten meters from the Blues line, from the resulting lineout the forwards caught and drove towards the line for David Brake of Caerphilly to score.

With the weather deteriorating the Blues found it difficult to get out of their own half and with The Dragons defending well the Blues were forced to kick the ball away only for Nathan Gittins of Fleur De Lys to pick up a loose kick and side step the full back to score in the corner with Howells converting which was the final score of the evening.

Gerry Roberts commented,

“Credit must go to all concerned within The Dragons camp for their professional attitude and commitment throughout this campaign. A big thank you must also go to the clubs and their coaches for supporting this initiative whom without their players we do not have a regional team.”
