Family Fun Day a Success

Rodney Parade was a hive of activity on Sunday when the annual Family Fun Day was held.

Rodney Parade was a hive of activity on Sunday when the annual Family Fun Day was held.

Thousands of people flocked to Rodney Parade for the first chance to meet the Dragons squad and watch the It's A Knockout competition as well as the tag rugby festival. There were bouncy castles for supporters to enjoy as well as various stalls such as Play Your Cards Right, Roll a 10p and Crack the Safe.

Fitness First were present and they hosted the Luke Charteris Rowing Challenge where Luke had to row as far as he could in one minute. Luke rowed an impressive 408m and laid the gauntlet down and if anyone could beat his distance they would win a years membership to the Fitness First gym. Sadly there were no budding Steve Redgrave's in our midst and no one was able to beat Luke's distance.

Local singing sensation Holly Holyoake entertained the crowds with a number of songs. Holly has been nominated for the Woman of the Year award in London later in the year and no doubt everyone will wish her the best of luck for this award.

Rodney Parade hosted the Uskmouth Tag Rugby tournament, which was run by Community Projects Manager Mike Sage and Development Officer Janice Chappell. Monmouth won the U10s and Penallta won the U8s, Uskmouth Power kindly sponsored the event which was a tremendous success and all the youngsters enjoyed playing on the hallowed Rodney Parade turf.

The main event of the day was the It's A Knockout competition organised by Fun and Leisure Event Specialists a company based in Kent. It was a hotly contested competition between six teams; The Dragons, Newport Rugby Team, Bisley Office Equipment, Lucas Removals Cardiff, Dragons Slayers and Ponthir Engineering. The teams had to compete in a number of games some of which saw them get absolutely soaked and they had to use their skill and ingenuity to the maximum to win the games. There were six games in total and it went down to the wire. The final game White Water Rafting was contested between the top three teams and Bisley Office Equipment won this game and the coveted Dragons trophy. All the teams enjoyed the competition as did the large crowd who watched and a big thanks goes to those who entered the competition. The Newport Gwent Dragons and Newport Rugby sides both fully entered into the spirit of the day and this rubbed off onto the crowds watching.

Following the knockout the Raffle Draw took place with Dragons Head Coach Paul Turner drawing the winning ticket being held by a luck father who had been supporting his son in the rugby tournaments.

A number of volunteers helped out on the day and everyone at Rodney Parade would like to thank them for their help and making the day a great success.
