Amos Joins Blues

21/03/2019

Wales international Hallam Amos will switch regions ahead of the 2019-20 season when he will bring to an end a ten-year tenure with the Dragons to link up with Cardiff Blues.

After coming through the Dragons academy, the versatile back became the youngest ever regional player, making a try-scoring debut in the away win against Wasps in the LV= Cup aged just 17 years and 28 days.

Monmouthshire-born Amos went on to become the youngest starting player in the PRO12, when he was picked for the Dragons against the Ospreys in April 2012 and first made the step up to Wales honours on the wing against Tonga in 2013 before featuring in the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

With 19 Wales caps and 111 appearances for the Dragons, Amos will call time on his Dragons career at the end of this season.

“The Dragons has been my home for a decade if you include my time at the Academy and after growing up in Monmouth, it’s always been my home region,” said Amos.

“My decision to leave is no reflection of what is being built at the Dragons, as the direction the region is going is positive.

“I’ve three years left of my medical studies, whilst still playing rugby at the highest level I can, so the opportunity at Cardiff Blues is the best thing for my career, to experience a new challenge and stake a claim for regular Wales starting spot.”

Head coach Ceri Jones said, “Hallam has been a fantastic servant for the Dragons with eight seasons in the first team after progressing up from our Academy. A man of the region, he’s been a stand-out talent, so we respect his decision and we wish him well for his next chapter in his career once his time with us comes to an end.

“We all hope Hallam gets his chance to shine for Wales in Japan and that Warren Gatland’s team can challenge for the Rugby World Cup title, but next year teams will have to maximise their resources to remain competitive whilst players are away with Wales.”
