Talented young backs Connor Edwards and Arwel Robson have agreed new contracts to remain at Dragons.
Playmaker Robson has put pen to paper on a contract to remain at Rodney Parade until at least 2020 to join Sam Davies, Josh Lewis and Jacob Botica as the region’s new-look fly half department, whilst Connor Edwards will compete for a position at centre.
Arwel Robson, 22, made five appearances last season, scoring a memorable try against Zebre at Rodney Parade in September, before a hamstring injury ended his season early. The Caerphilly-born back made his regional debut in November 2016 against Leicester Tigers in the Anglo Welsh Cup, and now has 19 appearances for the Men of Gwent, scoring 69 points.
“It’s been a frustrating few months with the injury, but I’m looking forward to getting back on the pitch and proving what I’m capable of,” said Arwel.
“There’s more competition for the number 10 jersey now, but having been out for some time, it will be good to step up training now we’re back in pre-season.”
Connor Edwards, 21, has ten appearances for the Dragons after making his debut in the Anglo Welsh Cup victory against the Scarlets at Rodney Parade in November 2017.
He touched down for his first try in his fourth start for the region against Benetton in April last year to finish a sweeping move. Last season he captained the Dragons in the augural season of the Celtic Cup before joining Greene King IPA Championship side Hartpury on loan.
Edwards said, “I’m really happy to re-sign with the Dragons. I’m proud to be from Gwent and I want to be a part of making the region successful. I’m looking forward to getting stuck in to pre-season and competing for the starting jersey.”
Barry Maddocks, Dragons Backs Coach said, “Arwel and Connor are two of a young group we have in our ranks that we see real developments in and we see bright futures for them both.
“Connor Edwards has the capacity to play directly - he brings physicality, is strong in contact and he is a strong defender. Arwel likes to play running rugby too, he’s maturing and is aware of what he needs to get better at and is enthusiastic about improving his game.
“Hopefully they can both get more game-time, push on and be a big part of our plans.”
