Griffiths firing on all cylinders

12/08/2019

Dragons back row Ollie Griffiths is out to impress two bosses this coming season – but insists having a focus on life at Rodney Parade is the priority.

Griffiths has returned to full training after successful surgery and rehabilitation on a ruptured bicep suffered against Benetton Rugby last February.

The 24-year-old from Newbridge is keen to be involved from the start with Dragons as Dean Ryan continues to shape a new-look side ahead of the new Guinness PRO14 season.

And with Wayne Pivac soon replacing Warren Gatland, Griffiths knows a big campaign could also mean he adds to his solitary international cap, against Tonga in the summer of 2017.

“I’ve been back fully fit since the start of pre-season so I’m enjoying being back out there, especially after being on the sidelines for six or seven weeks at the end of last season,” said Griffiths.

"I get on with Dean (Ryan), he's a straightforward guy and says it how it is which is good.

"Training has been fairly different, we've been doing a lot more rugby than we usually do in pre-season.

"I think we're going to be a team that likes to play a lot and we're structuring our training around that. It’s exciting times.”

Griffiths is determined to focus on his rugby at Dragons and not be distracted by any potential talk of international call-ups under new Wales coach Pivac.

But he acknowledges that playing for his country again will always be a target and taking any opportunity should it arise.

“I’ve had some unfortunate injuries, but if you look at the depth of the Wales back-row, there's so many quality players,” he said.

“It's about getting your foot in the door and keeping it in there when you do get an opportunity.

"If that opportunity does come then I need to make sure I'm ready to take it.

"If you look at Aaron (Wainwright), he had a chance and has taken it and he's probably going to be going to Japan with the World Cup squad.

“It's about getting that opportunity and taking it when it does come."
