Mixed emotions for Jones after draw

07/04/2019

Head Coach Ceri Jones admitted there were mixed emotions after Dragons battled back to draw 18-18 with Isuzu Southern Kings in the Guinness PRO14 in Port Elizabeth.

Josh Lewis slotted a late penalty to ensure the points were shared at the NMU Madibaz University after earlier tries from Adam Warren and Jordan Williams.

However, Jones insisted it could have been even better in South Africa as Dragons created numerous chances to claim an away win in the league.

“It is mixed emotions for us after the game. It’s a game we should have won, but could have lost,” he said.

“We left three or four clear cut opportunities out there, but we have got to be pleased to get a draw considering we were behind going into the final five minutes.

“When you look at our away record, it’s not good so we have to take the points and be better next week.

“However, there is frustration in the dressing room after that we didn’t take more.

“I felt we produced lots of good attacking rugby, showed we can be dangerous when we keep the ball,” he added.

“But our discipline did let us down at times and the penalty count wasn’t great. We will need to address that for next weekend.

“Credit to the players. We showed plenty of spirit, especially in the second half, and the heads never went down.”

Dragons saw a second half try from Rhodri Williams chalked off for a marginal forward pass while both teams were reduced to 13 men after a flurry of cards.

“I was frustrated by some of the officiating,”said Jones. “We felt there was a clear pull back on Jordan Williams that was not seen when he could have scored again.

“I was also disappointed that Leon (Brown) was yellow carded. We felt he was going forward and had the upper-hand in the scrum.

“But we have also got to look at ourselves and our discipline let us down at times, we lost some control at the scrum and it became too chaotic.

“Overall, we have to take positives from it and look to build against the Cheetahs.”
