"We’re compounding our errors" - Dee

Despite getting his third try in two European Challenge Cup games, hooker Elliot Dee didnt get the send off he and the other internationals wanted before heading off to Wales camp next week.

Q. Elliot, reflections on tonight’s defeat?
A. It’s a massively disappointing night for us, we can’t gift teams those sort of chances in the first half of the game especially a team like Northampton who have a big physical game, who come with a big driving maul, a big power game, and that’s what we did first twenty minutes.

Going down to thirteen men didn’t help, although it was good to show some character in the second half, but again silly mistakes gifted tries and put us under the kosh.

Q. As a team how do you arrest the mistakes?
A. We’re putting ourselves under pressure and losing games which is something we have to cut out. Good teams don’t make the mistakes or if they do they don’t compound more than one error at a time and at the moment we’re compounding errors which makes it hard to shift the momentum.

Can you explain the poor start tonight?
Northampton are renowned for their driving maul game and we defended that pretty well tonight. We were unlucky with some decisions, so it’s tough sometimes, but we’ve got to stop compounding errors and I’m sure that will come.

We had a good week in training, with a good buzz around the camp. There’s still positives to take from that game with the tries we scored and character we showed in the second half but we’ve got to put complete performances in.

We’ve had games where we came out all guns blazing and then momentum shift has led to games slipping away from us. But tonight it was the other way round, gifting tries straight away put us under pressure and then clawing your way back isn’t easy.

Q. What’s it like after a defeat like this tonight?
A. We need to deal with the criticism and pressure, but it’s important to focus on what you can correct as a team and try to put it right next week. We need to knuckle down in training again this week.

Q. Can you understand why supporters get frustrated?
A. It’s tough to support a team that aren’t winning every game, but nobody goes out on the field to try and lose the game.

All the boys are trying to give their best, and whilst it’s easy to look on and criticise when you are actually out there and giving your all you try not to read into the negativity.

It’s important when you make mistakes you don’t go into your shell. Josh didn’t, he put in some cracking kicks into the corner for us and we scored two tries off a driving maul plus the penalty try.

We’ve asked for the ball to be pushed right into the corner. You cant blame someone for trying to do their best for the team, he’s done a good job on the other kicks putting us in the right areas and we capitalised off it.
