Taylor ready to push for starting spot

Forward Huw Taylor is eager to push his first team claims during the autumn international window.

Taylor, who can operate at lock or in the back row, joined Dragons in the summer from Worcester Warriors and has made six appearances off the bench so far this season.

However, with Aaron Wainwright, Ross Moriarty and Cory Hill away with Wales the 22-year-old knows he now has a platform to show his true worth – starting with an away trip to Ulster Rugby in the Guinness PRO14.

“I’ve had quite a few opportunities off the bench and seem to be going well,” said Taylor.

“I am just trying to make an impact when I get on and hope to get a start in the next few weeks with the Wales boys away, this is a chance to put my hand up.

“Ross and Aaron are in my position – I have been covering blindside and lock, but hopefully I can put my name down for that six shirt in the back row now.

“I listen to what Bernard (Jackman) says and will play wherever he tells me to, but I see myself as a six.

“The competition can only be good,” he added. “We have had mixed results, but the back row has been one of the highlights of the whole team.

“That means it’s up to me and the likes of Nic Cudd, Harrison Keddie and the others to keep that going.

“We are all really excited for the Welsh lads to be going and for us to get this opportunity. We can get tighter as a unit and really attack these teams and give it a go against Ulster and Connacht.”

First up is a trip to Ulster Rugby and the intimidating surroundings of the Kingspan Stadium – which will be a new experience for Taylor.

“It’s my first trip there, but the boys say that it is always a physical battle,” he said.

“We are going out there with the intention of playing attacking rugby. We have talked about the slow first half against Northampton when we didn’t get out of the blocks.

“There were a few bad decisions and mistakes that led to them scoring and getting yellow cards from the driving maul. We are going to try and rectify that this weekend and kick on.”
