Evans - Fry handled heat of Russia clash

Ian Evans praised the all-action performance of dynamic back row Ben Fry in the victory over Russia – and believes the victory can give Dragons momentum as they head back into Guinness PRO14 action.

Wales Under-20 international flanker Fry produced an impressive 80-minute display and grabbed a first half try as six-try Dragons won 38-24 at Bedwas.

Evans, who coached the team alongside Alan Kingsley on the night, was pleased with the showing of many of the youngsters and also the senior squad members who put their hands up for league selection.

“I thought some of the youngsters performed really well,” said Evans. “I felt Ben Fry really excelled. His physicality was great and for a young man he didn’t shy away from any of it.

“We are blessed with some quality back rows - fingers crossed we can now get some 6ft 6in players in the region now and get bigger and bigger,” he smiled.

“The tight five was pretty strong and Ryan Bevington and Aaron Jarvis showed their experience. Daf Howells also showed glimpses when he got his hands on the ball and he scored a nice try.

“It was an enjoyable game and it’s nice to get a victory,” added Evans. “The first half we were good in terms of territory and second half we probably lacked that a little bit. But, all in all, it is a positive evening for us.

“It was nice for some of the senior players for the confidence, to get their hands up ready next week for selection.

“Russia are a well drilled team who are only going to get better the more time they spend together and games they play. It is a very good result for us.”

Dragons now return to Guinness PRO14 action next Sunday (November 25) when Edinburgh Rugby travel to Rodney Parade.

And Evans knows Dragons will need to produce a polished performance against a Scottish side that is well-drilled.

“The boys are looking forward to playing a quality team, especially with the way Richard Cockerill drills his team,” said Evans.

“Richard Cockerill is a quality coach and he knows exactly what it takes to win.

“He has worked at Leicester and Toulon and has now got Edinburgh firing within the pack. They are organised and know how to win games.”
