Dragons launch Foundation Course

Dragons are delighted to launch a new two-year Foundation Degree course in partnership with Welsh Rugby Union and University of South Wales.

Martyn Bicknell | 12/05/2018
The blended learning course gives students the opportunity to gain valuable vocational experience as they work towards a degree, whilst enhancing their employability skills, as it combines study at USW and with flexibility for the student to work as part of the Dragons community team and gain hands on experience.

As such the course is ideal for individuals who wish to work in the ever-expanding rugby industry, whether this is as a coach, or as a member of staff working within communities developing and delivering initiatives.

On completion of the Foundation Degree course, students can progress on to a third year of studies to achieve a BSc (Hons) degree in Rugby Coaching and Performance.

The course allows students to study all sub-disciplines of coaching and gain valuable industry-recognised qualifications and will teach students aspects of children and youth coaching, rugby coaching, rugby development, social inclusion and sport management skills.

"We have built a great working relationship with USW and this is an exciting opportunity to develop our education provision at Rodney Parade,” said Mike Sage, Dragons community manager.

“Working alongside the WRU community team we will provide top class education through the delivery of a two-year foundation degree.

“This course aligns really well with our aim of developing the next generation of rugby coaches, community officers and also providing the perfect platform for further education."

The degree is endorsed by Sports Coach UK, highlighting that the course meets industry standards and requirements, giving students an advantage when seeking employment. Students can develop their coaching profile through working towards the Welsh Rugby Union Level 1 and Level 2 coaching certificate.

There will also be further opportunities for students to enhance their knowledge with an extensive work-based learning programme provided by the club, working within specific roles and delivering rugby projects.
