Hill to captain Dragons this season

Dragons have today confirmed that Wales international lock forward Cory Hill will captain the side for the upcoming season.

Hill, who was also co-captain for Wales’ summer tour to South Africa, will continue in the role after impressive during the 2017/18 campaign at Rodney Parade.

The 26-year-old has made over 90 appearances for the Dragons since his arrival in 2013.

The second row has also excelled on the international stage, since his debut in 2016, and was named by Wales head coach Warren Gatland as the most improved player in his squad during the summer.

Pontypridd-born Hill, who was also called into the British and Irish Lions squad for their series in New Zealand in 2017, is expected to make his first appearance of pre-season for the Dragons this Thursday at Gloucester Rugby.

Commenting on the re-appointment of Hill, head coach Bernard Jackman said: “Cory was incredibly impressive as a leader last season in difficult circumstances. We had so many injuries but he pulled together a young team and was a real role model.

“His development has been recognised by the Welsh management and the decision to make him co-captain for the Welsh summer tour was a huge honour for both Cory and the Dragons. His reappointment was an easy decision as he is the outstanding candidate.

“Cory has become more self-assured and is very calm under pressure and in difficult situations,” he added. “He reminds me of my former captain Leo Cullen in that he very rarely gets flustered, makes the right decisions and will bring a young group of players together.”

Hill said: “I’m delighted to be named captain for a second season at the Dragons and really excited about the year ahead.

“We’ve got a new-look squad, with a good mix of young talent and experienced players, as we look to build that strength in depth.

“The new players have all settled in quickly and we’re all working hard to make a positive start in the Guinness PRO14.

“We’re determined to really kick on this season and that all starts on September 1 when we face Benetton Rugby in our first home game of the season at Rodney Parade.”
