Dixon relishing leadership role

Jack Dixon admits he has relished his leadership role during pre-season – and cannot wait to start the new Guinness PRO14 campaign on home soil.

Dixon, 23, missed a large chunk of last season after an elbow ligament injury.

However, the Newbridge-born centre has been back to his marauding best this pre-season and has captained the side against Ealing Trailfinders and Northampton Saints.

Dixon, who made his Dragons debut in 2011, is also part of the defensive leadership group and has enjoyed taking on the responsibility as the countdown to the league opener gathers pace.

“I feel fresh and I’m looking forward to the season starting,” said Dixon. “Pre-season has been a bit different this year, with some new faces and additions to the coaching side, and everybody has enjoyed it.

“I’ve enjoyed the leadership role and feel I’ve stepped into it well. Captaining the side for the first two games was a shock but I’ve relished it.

“We have settled quickly as a squad. I just look to concentrate on my own form first, but if anybody wants a hand then I’m here to help. Everybody has fitted in well and we’re gelling as a team.”

Dixon will now hope to be involved when the Dragons travel to Kingsholm to face Gloucester on Thursday evening.

“Week on week we are growing and getting stronger. Everything has fallen into place nicely the last few weeks,” he added.

“We’re going to Gloucester for our last pre-season game and it is another chance for boys to get match fit and ready.

“Benetton Rugby first up is a massive one for us – we are really targeting that and our thoughts are on it.

“We’ve spoken about the first four or five games and making a good start. The focus, though, is on Benetton Rugby and if we can win that first one it will really kick-start our season."
