O'Brien gets the nod for Cup final

Newport RFC player Matt O’Brien will be playing his part against Merthyr in the WRU National Cup Final on Sunday, as he captains his side at the Principality Stadium.

The fly-half will don his Black and Amber jersey this Sunday at the National Stadium and knows what the team have to do it take the trophy home. “Merthyr are a strong side and they are probably the favourites going into the game, but we are going to stick to what we have been doing this season,” explained O’Brien.

“They are big physical side so we have to play in a certain way and I think as long as everyone shows up on the day there is no reason why we can’t win the trophy.

“This will be the first time that I have played at the Principality Stadium, and I am really looking forward to it – it will be a good occasion.”

As well as playing for Newport RFC, O’Brien recently joined the Dragons as Academy Head Coach and has been in the role for around six months. “The new job is going really well, its challenging but I am enjoying it," he said.

“The youngsters have bought into how we want to play and we have tried to challenge them in training by bringing new ideas into sessions all the time - we are lucky that we have some good young players."
