Phil James Memorial Tag Finals were a hot contest

In fact, four primary schools took to the field to do battle for the Tata Steel Phil James Memorial Cup and the Tata Steel Phil James Memorial Shield.

The trophies, renamed in honour of Mr Phil James who sadly passed away in 2016 after 14 years’ service to the region, were hotly contested.

It was the first time in the 16-year existence that the finals were held away from Rodney Parade and all teams looked to make their mark at the venue.

In fact, both games ended in a draw, befitting of Phil’s and the Dragons Community’s ethos of fair-play.

For the Shield, Ysgol Y Ffin and Castle Park drew 1-1 and the Cup finished 2-2 between Dewstow and Langstone.

All teams were presented with trophies for their efforts and these were presented by representatives from Tata Steel, Newport Gwent Dragons and Phil’s family.

The two draws mean both the Shield and Cup will spend six months at both schools before returning in time for the 2018 finals.
