Region on the Road Skills Camps a Great Success

Last week Newport Gwent Dragons visited rugby clubs and schools in the heart of the region with their “Region On the Road” Skills Camps.

The camps saw rugby players develop and learn skills such as running, passing, handling and contact/TAG skills allowing the Dragons to improve their game from the grassroots.

Mike Sage, Newport Gwent Dragons Community Manager said: “We’ve been running Skills Camps at the Dragons now for 17 years, initially our focus was running them at Rodney Parade but over the last year or so we’ve taken them out into the Region, which is great to engage in a larger amount of boys and girls.

“We want kids coming out of the sessions having enjoyed themselves and be more skilful which they can take back to their schools and clubs making them better rugby players whilst also having an association with the Newport Gwent Dragons.”

During the half-term week, the Dragons visited three locations in total, Whiteheads RFC on Tuesday, Caldicot RFC on Wednesday, and Rougemont School on the Thursday. All the children who attended were lucky enough to impress Dragons’ stars who came along to the camps. Nick Macleod visited Whiteheads RFC, Rynard Landman and Brok Harris visited Caldicot RFC, and finally Ashton Hewitt and Dragons captain Lewis Evans visited Rougemont School.

All players were impressed with the quality of rugby on display by all the young players throughout the week. Lewis Evans said: “It was good to be a part of the Skills Camps today in Rougemont, with a fantastic group of players coming through.

“I hope they have learnt something and I also think there could be some future stars coming through after learning some good rugby skills.”

Ashton Hewitt added: “It is good to see the Dragons getting involved with the young members of the community in the different schools. I remember Sagey (Mike Sage) and Janice coming around to my school when I was a similar age and it is really good developing skills at a young age, hopefully they develop as players and people and go on to do good things.”

Each young player also received a special Dragons gift as a thank you for attending the “Region On the Road” Skills Camps.

Off the back of the success of the “Region On the Road” Skills Camps this half term, make sure you act fact and book your child on the Easter Skills Camps, so they can have an experience that will make their year. The Easter camps will take place on 11th, 12th,18th and 19th April 2017 and will once again take place throughout the Region. Prices will range from £25-35 per child, and each will have limited space so it is essential to book early. For further information, please contact matt.williams@rodneyparadeltd.com.
