Aspiring rugby players will be given a fair chance this weekend with Half A Game festivals taking place at Croesyceiliog and Bedwas on Sunday, from 10am.

More than 100 boys and girls will be guaranteed game time as part of the WRU’s initiative which gives children of all ages and abilities the opportunity to play a minimum of half a game.

Leading by example, festival hosts Bedwas have joined the nationwide campaign to retain the increased number of minis and juniors involved in the game. They have signed up their entire minis section with their U7s to U11s playing Blackwood’s minis at Bridgefield this weekend.

“Mini and Junior rugby has grown and grown at Bedwas over the last few seasons and we want to make it even bigger!” said James Clarke who heads up Bedwas minis and juniors. “It is really important to the whole club as it puts us at the heart of the local community and provides our young people with some excellent opportunities and experiences.”

Croesyceiliog has also stepped up to host Abertillery, Cwmbran, Merthyr, NHSOB, Pontypool United, RTB Ebbw Vale and Usk in the U8s age group. Croesy will also play RTB Ebbw Vale across U7s, U9s, U10s and U11s while, on their Northfields pitches, the U12s meet Chepstow and U16s welcome, from the Cardiff Blues region, Pontypridd.

The next generation of Dragons talent join in excess of 1,000 teams signed up to the WRU’s participation initiative which promotes fun and inclusive rugby as part of the overarching remit to engage more people, more often with more enjoyment and more success.

WRU Regional Coordinator Aled James has hailed the huge support in the Dragons region, which forms a crucial part of the positive momentum the campaign has generated nationwide.

“Minis and juniors rugby is thriving across the nation thanks to the fantastic people involved and their widespread support for the fun and inclusive Half A Game initiative. I’m proud to represent the Dragons region where the likes of Croesy and Bedwas have joined clubs across the country and thrown their full support behind the scheme. We’re all looking forward to another great weekend of rugby for children of all ages and abilities at their clubs this weekend.”
