Dragons v Pau Match Report

Newport Gwent Dragons remain at the top of their European Rugby Challenege Cup pool after a fantastic 22-0 win against Pau at Rodney Parade.

The Men of Gwent put in a fantastic game of rugby against the French side after beating Munster at home just six days previous to the game.

With the wind and rain coming down in Newport, the Dragons began the match well with a penalty kick from the boot of Dorian Jones. With Jones’ kicking on point he added another three points before Man of the Match Sarel Pretorius went over the white wash. It was a 70m dash from the scrum-half after he intercepted the ball to make it 11-0 with 30 minutes on the clock.

A late tackle to Ashton Hewitt saw Marika Vunibaka yellow carded just before the half-time whistle was blown. However nothing came of this chance before the half time whistle was blown.

Half Time: Newport Gwent Dragons 11 – Pau 0

The Rodney Parade outfit managed to kick another two penalties despite the visitors attacking the Dragons line hard. The Dragons looked to score another try on a numerous amount of occasions but it was Dorian Jones who showed pace to burst through the Pau defence and cross the white wash.

It looked like the Welsh Region were over once again as a kick up field from Pretorius saw Ashton Hewitt beat the defence to catch up with the ball only for him to knock the ball on before crossing the line.

The final chance of the afternoon was also lost, this time it was Rynard Landman who couldn’t hold onto the ball after they attempted a driving line out, which was well defended by the visitors.

Which meant that the final scores were Dragons 22 – Pau 0.

Referee: Craig Maxwell-Keys

Attendance: 4,202

Man of the Match: Sarel Pretorius
