MBS gives National charity a helping hand

A big success of home matches this season has been the partnership between our Community Department with Monmouthshire Building Society and the introduction of a half time kicking competition.

Community News | 21/11/2014

The crowds tend to hang around at half time now just to enjoy the action as youngsters do their very best to try and get their three kicks through the posts.

The Newcastle match was a whole new ball game when our newly slimmed down Rodney the Dragon took on other mascots including our sponsors Melin Homes, Melvin the Dragon and our good friends at Burtons Biscuits via Jammy Dodger the Monkey, who are huge fundraisers for Children in Need. Thus it was that the Godfather of mascots – Pudsey the Bear, was there in person himself.

To complete this impressive line up was a For Luca representative, and Monmouthshire Building Society was so impressed that they not only agreed to donate all the prize money to both charities, they also upped the funding totals and £100 went to Luca and Children in Need.

The competition couldn’t have been any more exciting with Rodney breaking his ten year duck of never winning anything to kick two balls firmly between the posts to beat off the challenge of the Jammy Dodger Monkey.

And just like waiting for a bus, no sooner had Rodney won his first ever competition than he doubled his totals by sprinting clear of the other four mascots as they raced each other over the full length of pitch.

The crowd showed their appreciation by giving all the mascots a huge round of applause and everyone went home delighted with the entertainment.

A few days later Alan Roderick, Head of Marketing for Monmouthshire Building Society came clutching two cheques and proudly presented the one to a returning Pudsey and Michelle Knowles, Raw Materials Technologist at Burtons Biscuit Company who was delighted to accept the cheque to boost the huge total that they have already raised for Children in Need.

The mascots were kept in check by our Community Development Officer Janice Chappell.

A big thanks to the Dragons Community and to all the mascots for providing real entertainment but also to Monmouthshire Building Society for ensuring the event also had a real meaning and raised valuable funds for two very worthy causes. Well done to all involved.
