Starting from The Riverfront lots of local people have already signed up to run one, three, or six miles, but there’s still time to sign up.
“Sport Relief is such a great cause to raise money; for both the UK and abroad,” said T.Rhys Thomas.
“It’s very exciting to be involved as I always watch it on the television and admire what the public do for the cause.
“I am truly honoured to be alongside all of South Wales who are supporting this cause. On behalf of the Newport Gwent Dragons I would like to wish everyone good luck with raising as much money as they can. See you at the finish line.”
A few weeks ago the second Newport half marathon was run in the city and if you missed out on a place then why not sign up to the Sport Relief challenge. You can run either one, three or six miles.
Newport City Council cabinet member for sport and culture, Councillor Debbie Wilcox said: “We are delighted that residents have already signed up but we want even more people in Newport to take part and make it the best Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile yet. So let’s show the rest of the country what we can do and raise as much money as we possibly can for this great cause.”
The Riverfront Theatre will open for spectators of the event.
The venue will be open from 8am – 12pm and there will be a special offer in the café for runners and race supporters.
The special offer is as follows:
Hot bacon sandwich or egg sandwich with a takeaway filter coffee or tea £2.50
or
Sweet muffin with takeaway filter coffee or tea £2.50
Crisps, cans and other pre-packaged snacks will also be available on the day.
There will be activity for youngsters including face painting as well as magazines and comfy seating available all morning.
On Friday 21 March the BBC will treat the nation to a special night of Sport Relief TV, with presenters Gary Lineker, Davina McCall, David Walliams, Claudia Winkleman and Jack Whitehall among others, hosting a star-studded show full of celebrity performances, comedy sketches, highlights from this year’s challenges and films about the incredible work Sport Relief supports.
Del Boy and Rodney will be back on TV screens after 10 years with a special Only Fools and Horses Sport Relief sketch, featuring one of the show’s biggest fans - David Beckham.
Four brave Paralympians will swap their sports kit for sequins and will take on a group dance challenge in a Sport Relief Does Strictly special, with Tess Daly revealing the judges’ favourite on the night. There will also be further announcements about more exciting sketches and specials in the coming weeks.
Then on Sunday 23 March it’s over to Newport to come together and take part in the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games.
