Dragons qualify for 7s Finals

Newport Gwent Dragons have qualified for finals day of the Premiership Rugby 7s which will take place at the Twickenham Stoop on Friday 8th August.

The men of Gwent beat both the Scarlets and the Ospreys but drew with the Cardiff Blues. Overall the Dragons finished in second place as the referee awarded a penalty try to the Blues on the last game on the tournament.

The Welsh region began their tournament with a 21-14 win against the Scarlets. Tries were scored by Wales 7s player Rhys Jones, Cross Keys’ Jonny Lewis and Newport winger Elliot Frewen. They then went on to win against the Ospreys with tries from Matthew Pewtner, Ollie Griffiths, Elliot Frewen and Jonny Lewis. The final score between the Dragons and Ospreys ended on 22-7.

The final game was against the Blues and they began the game with a bang as Ellis Wyn Benham crossed the whitewash. However, the Dragons finally broke through with the final play of the half when their star men combined, Rhys Jones putting Frewen over for a 7-5 lead. Player of the tournament Pewtner went on to stretch that lead a minute after the restart when he crossed the line. Ollie Griffiths also raced over for a score that should have secured victory only for Dorian Jones to miss the conversion. It was costly, as the Blues struck back at the death with 14 points in the last 90 seconds courtesy of Tom Williams’ score and the penalty try for not retreating 10 metres.
