A Special Treat for Work Experience Students

Rodney Parade has become a very popular venue for students to spend their work experience period and this week the three students were excited to meet and speak to Hallam Amos.

Community | 09/07/2014

The Welsh international is a fantastic role model and was able to provide some superb educational and sporting advice to the lads.

The community department works in partnership with their regional schools & Careers Wales to co-ordinate placements for the youngsters from all corners of the Region.

The experience includes visiting schools through Gateway Rugby, helping deliver the Second Half education project & other alternative education initiatives, whilst also assisting the community staff on match day duties.

The region is inundated with requests for placements and we seek to offer as many places that are feasibly possible. This school year alone we have helped over 30 students develop their employability skills by working alongside community manager, Mike Sage, education officer, Phil James and community development officer, Janice Chappell.

Mike Sage, community manager commented, “The students are a great help with the delivery of the activities. It is important that they gain valuable experience and skills during their time with us.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of this process is seeing the students build confidence and many come back on match days on a voluntary basis to assist us.”

Students Overviews:

Iwan Whittaker – Oakdale Comprehensive School

This experience has been excellent and one I will always remember. During my time at the Dragons I have developed more confidence in coaching young children. I’ve been taught how to take warm ups and referee small sided tag rugby games. I have also picked up a lot of coaching techniques that could come in handy for the future.

Robert Ashcroft – Fairwater High School

My experience has been really good this week because it has taught me a lot more coaching techniques and has improved my social skills. I have also learnt how to coach children and help them develop their rugby skills.

Ryan James – Caldicot Comprehensive School

The experience has been awesome and it’s been great to teach children how to play my favourite sport, Rugby. Many thanks to the Dragons for allowing us to have this fantastic opportunity; it’s been a great experience and meeting Hallam was the icing on the cake.
