Newport rap group Goldie Lookin Chain will put on a special performance at Rodney Parade as the Newport Gwent Dragons take on Glasgow Warriors in their first Magners League home tie.
GLC, who are keen Dragons fans, will perform before kick-off and take part in a kicking competition at half-time in the match on Sunday, September 12.
Rhys aka P-Xain, said: “We're very proud to be involved with the Dragons at the Glasgow game; it's absolutely fantastic. I played a bit of rugby growing up and all of us love any Newport, Gwent or Welsh sport.
“Four of the boys are massive Dragons fans and when I told them the news they were jumping around on the sofas and punching the air. We did the Wales v England football game at the Millennium Stadium a couple of years ago. That was really surreal to be on the pitch with people like David Beckham, Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard.
“Other than that we haven't done much at sporting events which is a shame. So playing at Rodney Parade is going to be immense. It’s like a dream come true for us. To be invited to play at Rodney Parade is the stuff of dreams for us. Hopefully lots of other people will get involved. We want people to have a great time, we want them to come down and have fun. We haven't decided what we are going to do yet but we will pull out a few of the bigger hits.
“But everyone in Newport should get involved with the Dragons.”
After the release of internet sensation Newport (Ymerodraeth State of Mind) in July, GLC hit the headlines with their own response, Newport State of Mind – You’re Not From Newport, speaking of the song, Rhys said: “Those people were pretending to be from Newport and a lot of local people were saying their not from Newport, I just had a thought of the chorus.
“I woke up, wrote it, recorded it and in the afternoon we were filming it - If you have a iron strike it while it's hot! But it was just a bit of fun. When I heard the first one I felt like they were ripping us off a bit and picking fun at Newport, but I came to realise how fantastic it was. It's very clear they have a massive affection for Newport and put it in the public eye. People should come to Newport and live the dream!”
The performance at Rodney Parade heralds the start of a busy period for the band with a new mix-tape hitting the shelves next week and then a celebrity golf day and gig on September 25th. The Goldie Lookin Golf Challenge, which will take place at the city’s municipal course in Caerleon, will include a number of celebrities and will be free to watch.
Following the golf day the GLC will put on a concert in the centre of Newport where other local bands such as Dirty Goods, Newport Allstars and 2Rude will perform.
