The Newport Gwent Dragons kicked-off their season, on Saturday, with a 27-11 victory on the road.  After a nightmare six-hour journey to the Maynne Field in Penzance, and a kick-off delayed an hour as a consequence, the Dragons overcame the Cornish Pirates scoring four tries in the process.

There were tries for debutants Matt Evans and Scott Morgan, while Aled Brew and Jason Tovey also touched down.

Speaking of the victory, Rugby Manager Robert Beale, said:  “It was a really good exercise particularly with the travel down there being really difficult, it took us six-hours to get there with the traffic horrendous.

“A lot of thanks has to go to the Cornish Pirates who put the kick-off back an hour.

“The game itself was an excellent win and all 27 players got some pitch time.  The result was pleasing and there were no serious injuries which is always a bonus.  The players and coaches got a lot out of the fixture.

“We took a mixed squad down there with experience and some young players and I felt guys like Jonathan Evans, Matthew Pewtner, Phil Price, Royce Cadman and Rob Nash, the Cross Keys captain, acquitted themselves well.

“All in all the coaches were very pleased with what they saw.  There is still plenty to work on but is always easier on the back of a positive result.”
