Gwent U15s v Caerphilly & District

The scene was set on a sunny day in Abergavenny for a close encounter between two sides who had their places at stake for next years Dragons U16’s squad.

However it was the Gwent side who triumphed with a combination of power up front and finesse in the backline.

Influential captain Naill Martin controlled the game well from the off, but it was the man of the match Scot Cole who scored the first as the dominant pack provided the platform for a marvellous solo effort.

The scrum became a significant attacking opportunity with front row Luigie Ocampo, Dan Goode and James Johnstone at the forefront of a tight pack who even managed to win three against the head.

Johnstone and Goode, and second row Ryan Morgan managed to bag themselves tries each after significant pressure was applied deep in the Caerphilly territory.

The backline showed how to utilise possession with excellent execution of skills from tenacious scrum half Conour Imms to the superb wings who each scored tries. Excellent finishing ability enabled Dominic Franchi to cup open the lack luster defence with powerful running and Jack Bruton completing a well executed move to put the young Gwent side firmly out of reach by the 50th minute.

A series of changes resulted in the continuity of the team being disturbed at some stages in the second half, but the fresh half back pairing of Josh Guy and Haydon Simons settled things down with the help of the classy Luke Morgan at centre. Cole had the honour of scoring the final try, crossing the line with ease at the end of a well deserved team victory.

With a final score of 50-0, it provides the coaches some difficult decisions ahead with games later on in the season, as these games provide the window of opportunity for some of the young stars of tomorrow.
