Wales most-capped forward and Newport Gwent Dragons defence coach Colin Charvis launched Sport Caerphilly CBs new Accredited Community Sports Coaches scheme at Blackwood RFC yesterday (Monday 24th November).

The coaches put the best U16s rugby players in the Dragons region through their paces at the start of this new initiative.

Caerphilly CBC, in conjunction with the Sports Council for Wales, have employed 11 part time coaches to deliver 80 hours of coaching in priority sports areas across the borough.

This is the first scheme of its kind in the area and acknowledges the need to increase participation levels in the borough. The 11 individuals working in these new roles are the first mass group of coaches to be employed by a Sports Development department in Wales and will go a long way to raising the profile and standard of coaching in the borough.

The coaches will be working across a variety of sports including rugby, football, gymnastics, badminton and aquatics. They will be delivering these activities to a wide variety of people from elite to grass roots sports in schools, community clubs and centres.

Assistant Director for Communities and Leisure, Peter Gomer commented, “Our Sports Development team has grown in size considerably over the past few years but we have seen an ever increasing demand from the public for more coaches to work in identified areas. This scheme will massively benefit the whole community and will only go further to raise the profile of sport”.

Colin Charvis added, “Without coaches, sport simply would not exist. These new coaches have an important role to play in the development of our next generation of athletes as well as raising activity levels of every individual in Caerphilly CB.”
