Dragons Coach Runs Marathon for NSPCC
Newport Gwent Dragons extend their best wishes to Dragons Academy coach Byron Hayward as he prepares to run the London Marathon on Sunday 13 April 2008.
Byron played the majority of his rugby in the region and has been training throughout Gwent all year to raise money for charity when he runs the twenty-six miles around London in April.
Speaking of the challenge he faces, Byron commented:
“I’ve been training hard since Christmas and am now up to eighteen miles at a time, which I run throughout the valleys of Ebbw Vale and Usk. Even though I’ve trained hard with rugby and boxing for the majority of my life, this type of training has been a challenge and still the thought of running twenty-six miles is tough!”
Byron hopes to raise £2000 for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) which aims to protect children from cruelty, support vulnerable families, campaign for changes in the law and raise awareness about abuse. He comments:
“The cause definitely helps to keep me focused on my training. The figures of child abuse are astounding with, for example, one child killed at the hands of the parent every ten days in England and Wales. I’m pleased that I’m able to contribute to the good work carried out by the NSPCC and am grateful to all the support I’ve received so far.”
