The Dragons summer camps kicked off in glorious sunshine last week when youngsters from all over the region attended a three-day camp.

The camps are sponsored by The Dragons official sponsors Finning UK Ltd and all the youngsters who attended received a goody bag from Regional Manager Martin Lumsden. Speaking on their involvement he said, "We got involved with The Dragons as we identified they had the same objectives as us, to be involved at community level and we were delighted to support the summer camps. Having visited Rodney Parade for the camp it was clear to see that the youngsters had a great time."

One of the benefits of the camps is that it not only introduces youngsters to rugby but has the added value that a number of youngsters are getting gripped by the rugby bug and joining local rugby clubs in the region.

One of the highlights of the three days included learning the Haka from Dragons back row player Nic Fitisemanu. The youngsters also enjoyed lunch with the Dragons squad and were filmed for a rugby skills show that will be shown on S4C. All in all it was a busy few days for those who attended but they did find time to squeeze in some skills taught by Community Projects Manager Mike Sage and Development Officer, Janice Chappell.

"The aim of the summer camps is to make the youngsters time at Rodney Parade enjoyable and memorable and I think we certainly achieved that with the last camp," commented Mike. "Not only have they developed their agility, handling skills, contact skills & decision making, they also gained new experiences in team building and communication. However, what was most pleasing was that they all left with a smile on their face."

Each youngster not only had valuable rugby skills, a goody bag from Finning UK Ltd but also received an official Dragons course certificate, two complimentary ticket to a game and a summer camp t-shirt.

"Just wanted to say thank you to you and your staff re. the summer camp. Our son Gareth has thoroughly enjoyed his time with you all this week and is really looking forward to the next one in a few weeks. Please pass our thanks to everyone concerned," said Paul Harris whose child had been on the course.

Camps will continue throughout the summer and will be held at Rodney Parade and throughout the region. For those youngsters who missed out this time there is still the annual Family Fun Day to look forward too on Sunday August 12th where there will be activities for all the family plus the chance to meet The Dragons squad.
