Team Announcement: Borders

Newport Gwent Dragons travel to The Borders on Friday night knowing that nothing less than a win will do.

Kath McCarthy | 13/10/2004

The Dragons have named a squad of 24 before deciding on the final squad tomorrow morning. “We have delayed announcing our starting XV until tomorrow morning,” commented team manager Jim McCreedy.

“We will check on the fitness of Hal Luscombe in training this afternoon. Hal has been training with the Welsh squad the early part of this week but we want to ensure he has recovered fully from a shoulder injury. Chris Anthony has taken a full part in training this week but need to check there has been no reaction to the contact work he has done. The Welsh players in the squad have been training with Wales on Monday and Tuesday so today’s training session will be the first opportunity for The Dragons coaching team to see them in action.”

The Dragons are naturally buoyed by their victory at fortress Ravenhill but are more than aware of the dangers that Borders will pose. “Borders is a difficult match for us and is a potential banana skin. They ran The Ospreys very close last week and will be buoyed at nearly beating the League leaders. They were drawing at half time and prevented The Ospreys from securing a bonus point. This is our last league game before going into Europe and we want to enter the Heineken Cup with momentum and confidence and be in a top three position in the Celtic League but we will have to remain focused if we are to achieve a win.”
